THE EAGLES: A 4-H CLUB WITH HOMESCHOOLING FAMILIES IN MIND
The Eagles are a homeschool 4-H club that meets in Douglas County Wisconsin, but members are gladly accepted from outside the region, including Minnesota! They are one of the largest, most active clubs in the county, and are now celebrating their 11th year as a club.
The Eagles meet on the second Tuesday of the month except in certain circumstances. For current meeting notes see the Events Page. Info: 715-374-2572. Regular monthly meetings begin at 1:30 at the Bennett Town Hall (Hwy. L just off Wisconsin Hwy. 53 in Douglas County).
You need only be in kindergarten to join 4-H and you can continue as a member until one year after high school graduation.
4-H Opportunities:
Young members are generally considered to be "Cloverbuds" and they take part in a wide range of activities, crafts, and games. They only need to be 8 years old to run for club office in the Eagles Club! Older members (those over 8) can chose from a wide variety of projects to pursue. There are over 80 different projects. 4-H is not just about animals and home crafts anymore! Kids can chose from everything from Model Rockets to Theater Arts. And if a project doesn't exist . . . they can create one!
The Eagles Club has gone on a number of adventures over the years. Here we've listed a few:
Biking around Lake Nebagamon, camping on Madeline Island, canoeing on the Brule River (and hiking, and camping there), Camping at Lake Owen in Drummond, WI, Photography hiking, exploration and swimming at Amnicon Falls, a fall hike to the bottom of Big Manitou Falls in Pattison Park, river tubing in Hayward, WI, Winter Camping, and the list goes on.
The club is also involved in community service projects. This year they put together 6 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. One spring they planted a new rain garden on Barker's Island, Superior. They've done other service projects as well, and here are a few. They did a bikeathon to raise money for a special bike for a boy with special needs. They've sung carols at a nursing home. They've done "needed items" donations for a local birth center. They've rung bells for the Salvation Army. The Eagles are an active club, and they continue to try and serve their community.
If you have questions about the Eagles, or 4-H in general, contact Apples of Gold and we'll put you in touch with one of the Eagles general leaders!
